the work was inspired by the personal experiences of my mother and father in the sixties. my father's family was largely confined to the states of alabama and mississippi. during the civil rights movement of the '60s, my mother's family was very active in the civil rights movement. my mother was a core member of the mississippi freedom democratic party and a member of sncc. the installation illustrates the struggle and struggle of the generations and how the life and experiences of my mother and father have shaped me.

i see it as a work of art which explores the political and social changes that occurred in the united states over the last 50 years. i want the audience to be able to experience the personal and political experiences that shaped and informed the work. my mother's family was very active in the civil rights movement of the sixties and i wanted to take that and connect it to the political and social changes of the last 50 years. my mother and father's life and experiences shaped my childhood. i wanted the audience to be able to experience those experiences, emotions and struggles.
